At Hookline Books we let serious
book groups select the novels for
publication.
We begin the process with the
Hookline Novel Competition. This is
open only to students and graduates
of MA writing courses. The
judges
are book groups from around the UK.
Writers submit the first three
chapters of their work and a brief
synopsis. These are bound in
collections and sent to book groups,
who have three months to read and
review them. The writers whose
works come out on top are then
asked to submit their complete
novels. Again, these are bound and
sent
to book groups who rate them
on plot, character development,
writing style and reader satisfaction.
The 2010 competition is beginning,
and we are always in need of book
groups to participate.

A Hookline Favourite

The Half-Slave by Trevor Bloom

As the Roman Empire declines, northern tribes move to
stake a claim, including the Franks under their ruthless
young Overlord Clovis. But his hopes of building a new
empire are jeopardized by the massing forces of a Saxon
uprising.
One young man is sent to find out where the Saxons will
strike. Ascha is the son of a Saxon warlord and a Roman
slave mother, a half-slave who has struggled to survive
under the Franks. But when Clovis offers to make him a
free man if he will spy on his own people, Ascha must
discover where his loyalties lie.

Readers said:
'Thoroughly convincing recreation of an entirely different era
which kept me fascinated by the characters and wholly involved in
the fate of the hero, with some gripping situations and moral
dilemmas. I found it increasingly hard to put down, so a lot of
midnight oil.'
'A refreshing lack of idealisation – even of the hero; I believed in
the characters.'
'I’d happily read the sequel!'

Art, like life, is never predictable

We recently announced the Hookline Novel Competition winner.
The Tartarus
Machine by
Frank Kennedy. This is an unusual work uniting Greek drama
with greed and the banking crisis. It was no surprise to readers of the work that
Frank, who studied for his MA in writing at City University, London, is a post-
graduate student at the London School of Economics. Given his studies, Frank
wants to be sure he captures the banking field exactly. As a result, he feels he
cannot meet the Hookline deadline and has asked to step aside and finish the
work
after graduation. The Tartarus Machine will now go to press as a Hookline
Favourite.

The joy of the Hookline Novel Competition is that the novels that rise to the top
are always so varied. Last year the top three novels fell into contemporary,
historic and young adult genre. This year is no different. The novel we will
publish as our Hookline Winner this year is
Carrying On by Jilly
Wosskow
, a comic novel of love, marriage and family.

Both Frank and Jilly are happy with this arrangement.
The Tartarus Machine
by Frank Kennedy

The story follows a demoted banker who plots revenge on his employers
and is a timely analysis of the banking crisis – with parallels in Greek
mythology!

Readers said: “
This is a remarkably quick-off-the-mark and original take
on the origins of the credit crunch and the global recession .“
“Not the sort of book I would normally read, but I was enthralled – learned
something too! I liked the comparison with Hades – thoroughly enjoyed it!

The Tartarus Machine will be available in paperback and ebook later this
year.
Carrying On
By Jilly Wosskow

Carrying On is a comic tale of women,
family, love and sex that begins with
Kathryn running away from home at 17
and ends with wedding vows – and this
time she means it!
